Photographer Charla Avery and professional writer David Kissinger wanted a place to combined their respective passions and tell a very personal story with creative abandon. A blog with the tagline “The Writer Meets the Photographer” started the discussion and ranged along a variety of topics that would be relevant to the blog’s overall brand and also showcase each contributor’s respective skills and portfolios.
After casting around for different names, brands and blog themes, they settled on “So There’s That”. Initially launching on Blogger, David and Charla ultimately wanted a blog theme with more fine-grain control of layout, typography and color. The resulting blog is a spare, single-column magazine with lush, full imagery and colorful writing to match it.
So There’s That mixes their personal lives and professional passions, and opens an intimate window onto their blended family, with topics on food, parties, lifestyle, travel, and emphasis on their hometown of Long Beach, Calif.
So There’s That was ultimately launch on self-hosted WordPress. It uses Serene Theme by Elegant Themes and then incorporates several additions to make it unique, including custom-built plugins, custom CSS, expanded fully-responsive layout, and specialized functionality added to the theme’s
functions.php for a reader experience like no other.
